THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE
Who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? There are three different saints named as Valentine or Valentinus from the Catholic Church. There was an emperor named as Claudius II. He was very cruel. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Valentine heard about this news he defied Claudius law and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. But when Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was rescued and put in the jail. In the jail, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter who comes to meet him daily. Jailer’s daughter was blind.
Once Valentine put his hand to girls eyes a miracle happens surrounding is visible to her. Both couples fell in love with each other. Soon Claudius comes to know about their relationship. He announces the death punishment to Valentine. Before Valentine’s death, he wrote a letter to the girl and signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. After the death of Valentine, this day is celebrated as a “valentine day”.
Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.
